A monk and a pickpocket become unlikely allies in this action adventure story. Sixty years ago, a nameless monk (Chow Yun-Fat) was appointed the guardian of a mysterious scroll that grants remarkable powers to those who possess it. After six decades of traveling the world to protect the scroll, the monk must find someone new to assume the responsibility, but as fate would have it, the new caretaker turns out to be Kar (Seann William Scott), a scruffy and distinctly non-enlightened petty thief living in San Francisco. As the monk attempts to educate Kar in the powers and responsibilities of the scroll and the ways of a monk's life, they discover they have a rival for the possession of the valuable scroll. As Kar and the monk fend off their mysterious adversary, they are aided by Bad Girl (Jaime King), a beautiful Russian mob affiliate with amazing martial arts skills and a vested interest in keeping the scroll in virtuous hands. Bulletproof Monk was based a comic book series published in 1999; Chow Yun-Fat's frequent collaborators John Woo and Terence Chang produced. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

New Trailer For Bulletproof Monk

Review For Bulletproof Monk

The fight scenes are routine, the humor juvenile, and the Toronto locales rendered drab through muddy cinematography.
Bill Stamets-Chicago Reader

Chow was never a martial arts star back home, but he's a good enough actor -- and an engaging enough personality -- to pass for one here.
-Time Out

They made a ton of junky movies in Hong Kong, but those were dazzlingly fluid and high-flying junky movies. This American retread has the same sort of hack plot but none of the bravura.
David Edelstein-Slate

[T]he thing about the martial arts sequences -- you've got the great Chow Yun-Fat, but this thing is directed MTV style: cut here, cut there, close-up. So we can't really tell if he's doing stunts or if it's all tricks of camerawork.
Richard Roeper-Ebert & Roeper

One of those motley movies that borrows from just about everywhere.
Mark Jenkins-Washington Post

Everything here is borrowed from other movies ...
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

Violent but cool martial arts movie.
Nell Minow-Common Sense Media

This is one piece of derivative, hokey, and really stupid action drivel.
Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed

An enticing title that perfectly sets up our anticipation for a rollicking martial-arts comic-book fable adventure.
Urban Cinefile Critics-Urban Cinefile

The constantly beaming monk is as good-natured as the script is mindless.
Mark Halverson-Sacramento News & Review

It's painful to watch.
-Empire Magazine

Paul Hunter edits his action scenes so much that it's really difficult to see anything spectacular, and the special effects aren't anything to drool over.
Jason Zingale-Bullz-Eye.com

... bringing music-video director Paul Hunter was a good move for pacing, but he could use a few lessons in filming fight scenes.
Matt Kelemen-Las Vegas CityLife

The bottom line is, this qualifies as a guilty pleasure.
Lori Hoffman-Atlantic City Weekly

Too much time is given over to the absolutely dire script.
Ed Colley-Future Movies UK

very childish, and just a little trashy.
Scott Nash-Three Movie Buffs

Chow Yun-Fat delivers stylish action and finally shows American audiences a sense of humor, but watching Stifler get his kung fu on is just a little too hard to swallow.
Andrew Manning-Radio Free Entertainment

An uneasy combination of self-help bromides, poorly edited fight sequences and music video-style flash.
Josh Bell-Las Vegas Weekly

...nonstop fighting, kicking, punching, and killing, with a dollop of juvenile humor thrown in.
John J. Puccio-Movie Metropolis

If you're a fan of martial arts, and fancy an alternative to the heavy going comic adaptations ahead, then this is your bag.
Clint Morris-Film Threat

The odd-couple chemistry between Chow and Scott carries the film until the unimaginative buddy formula wears thin.
Tom Meek-Boston Phoenix

In honor of Yun-Fat's Zen calm, let's say, 'Just because one has directed countless Mariah Carey videos does not mean one can film kung-fu, Lotus Blossom.'
Nick Rogers-State Journal-Register (Springfield, IL)

It's supremely ironic: the scroll defeats the body's natural decaying process. In today's movies, so does the computer. It's even more efficient than plastic surgery, but just as phoney.
Paul Byrnes-Sydney Morning Herald

A film based on utterly tired and useless material.
Garth Franklin-Dark Horizons
