Synopsis: Known as "China's Holocaust", the Cultural Revolution was among the most catastrophic and least understood events of the 20th-century. For 35 years one American, Sidney Rittenberg witnessed and participated in these and other formative events as an insider. Arriving in China at the end of World War II as a GI interpreter, Rittenberg joined the Communist Party and became an active participant in the Party's leadership, including Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai. Rittenberg gained prominence at the Chinese Broadcast Administration, the principal propaganda arm of the revolution and lectured around the country on Mao's behalf. But in the convulsions of an immense country constantly reinventing itself, Rittenberg twice ran afoul of the leadership, serving a total of 16 years in solitary confinement. Filmed over a 5-year period, Rittenberg's lucid and incisive description of events, his intimate knowledge of Mao's objectives, his own insights and his tenacious desire to be a part of history, make his life's story a central contribution to the history of the 20th Century. Review For The Revolutionary
It's a remarkable story, even if "The Revolutionary," a no-frills documentary drawn from five years of interviews, isn't much of a movie.Rachel Saltz-New York Times
An astounding performance by Sidney Rittenburg as he describes his loving and horrific 35 year relationship with Communist China.
Ron Wilkinson-Monsters and Critics
Captivating, heartfelt and gripping. It should be a requirement for every young American to watch this documentary.
Avi Offer-NYC Movie Guru
This aptly titled documentary draws upon the sharp memory and deep insights of a rueful nonagenarian. It might be of most interest to political people. If that describes you, DO NOT MISS IT.
Louis Proyect-rec.arts.movies.reviews
Artistically anemic documentary provides a thrillingly unique viewpoint on the disillusion and terror of the 20th century's most tragic revolution.
